Pilot Project: Summer Literacy Corps

If you’ve been checking out our facebook page, then you’ve probably read about the Summer Literacy Corps already. This is a brand new project that the Let’s Read! team is trying out. With the help of United Way of King County’s One Million Meals Campaign, this team was created just a few weeks ago. The Literacy Corps goal is to bring literacy and STEM activities to as many children as they can at summer meal sites in South King County, where children are typically the hardest to reach. This way, we can help prevent the summer learning slide, which is seen happening mostly to low-income children who are not connected or are exposed to all the resources they may need in the summer.

Summer learning with The Seattle Public Library

On today’s King 5’s New Day Northwest, a librarian from The Seattle Public Library talked about their summer program transition from reading to learning (incorporating STEM) and recommended a few books. They’re partnering this summer with the Pacific Science Center to bring this new component to libraries this summer. Along with the book reviews, audience members were able to participate with Margaret Larson in a fun science experiment, brought by the Pacific Science Center. See the segment below!
